Memorial Day: Bigfork Whitewater festival
As the weather becomes nicer and we move toward summer, many are wanting to get out and do what they love. For Montanan’s, they usually choose an outdoor activity such as hiking, camping, biking, fishing, or kayaking. Since 1982, Big Fork has held its annual Whitewater Festival. This festival is all about whitewater kayaking and community fun! Big Fork is located on the North side of Flathead Lake right where the Swan River feeds into Bigfork Bay. This exciting event is the longest-running in the area and brings participants from all over to compete in the Western Whitewater Championship Series. This year it is May 26-28, Memorial Day weekend! The last mile of the Swan River is known as the “Wild Mile” as it is a class IV section of whitewater. This section runs right through downtown Bigfork giving spectators a spectacular view of the action.
In addition, there are activities that take place during the festival such as parades, quilt shows, soccer and baseball tournaments, pancake breakfast, boat show, and a triathlon! Even if you are not a fan of the water, this is a great event with lots of other exciting events happening! In addition, Big Fork has spectacular scenery and a lovely community atmosphere. Memorial Day is always a busy weekend, but if you are looking for something to do, this would be my recommendation!
